Exclamation i'm sure this will start much ado

can someone please tell me why DHS makes people feel like sh*t, like they are trying to scam the system, if they apply for food stamps, welfare, or medicaid.

i applied for medicaid cuz i have not worked since 1/2008. my health ins ended this month and have i have several major illnesses. i applied for medicaid and got a letter from DHS wanting to know i'm supporting myself etc.

gee lets see, i am staying in a dark small room in my parents house (thats good for my depression), and i eat at soup kitchens and food banks.

no really i have $23 million dollars, a beach house in newport and a pent house in downtown Prov... come on lets get real...

I don't think it's just the DHS that treats citizens like crap. The Div of Taxation, Div of Unemployment, and the DIV of Motor Vehicles are also all famous for their atrocious customer service. If any of these departments were rivate sector businesses, they would have gone out of business long ago. So don't take it personally - the whole state government is completley a$$ backwards. Good luck to you!

...to continue the story...I would have patients that come to me on medicaid that would get "thrown off" for no apparent reason.

They would have to go through all the trouble of reapplying all over again and some of them, who were depressed, just couldn't get themselves to do it.

I could go on and on about how insanely the "system" functions (or doesn't) but why bother.

It's much easier to attack people who have no voice than corporate theives who steal billions.

The fact is there are an estimated 152,293 Rhode Island residents that have one or more disabilities. Only 20,000 or so people in the state actually collect SSI. The annual SSI payment including the state supplement is $8,332, $694 a month- try living on that.
