Seeking info on Providence car tax (2009, how much, live)

Can someone clearly explain the car tax in Providence, RI? I've lived here for 7 years and just heard about it for the first time. I've heard of people suddenly getting collection letters for unpaid bills and dont want that to happen to me! I've looked everywhere online and cant find clear information about it. I bought a car soon after I moved here, kept the registration up to date, and just traded it in for another car. I did find a list of tax rates (with an INCREDIBLY high rate for Providence), but then some people have suggested not all cars are taxed- that the car needs to be under a certain age or over a certain value.

but Im still confused- do they tax ALL cars? How can poor people with junky cars manage this tax? Im not sure how Im going to afford it...

There is no reason to be rude to me. I love Providence and I contribute much needed services to this city. I have never received a bill or any information about this tax, and my confusion and concern should be understandable. I am simply asking for information.

If you haven't received any kind of bill it might be the case that the city doesn't have your correct mailing address. Also, taxes are usually levied around a certain time of the year I believe. Don't think there's any way around paying the taxes if you want to re-register your car eventually.

wow.. pretty bold statement. i lived in RI for 27 years, and have moved 2 years ago... mainly because of the rudeness just like this.... btw, RI takes advantage of its citizens, read my old thread on this one. http://www.city-data.com/forum/rhode...-citizens.html

Ya, we know.

But his question -- and mine, too, since I registered a car in 2007 and haven't received a bill from the city -- is: How do I find out how much the tax is going to be?

And that's without calling up the city (assuming you could figure out who to call) and saying, "Hi, guys -- you're supposed to send me a whopping excise tax bill every year, but you haven't. Can you do that, please?"

Rhode Island deserved to be put down. And I don't think Nate probably cares for RI either since he puts Boston as his location. A lot of RI'ers use Boston as kind of a shield sometimes, probably since it is so much unlike Rhode Island to begin with.

My understanding is, is that once a car is at least 10 years old, you don't have to pay taxes on it.
