Hi : ) My boyfriend and I are thinking of moving to RI. We'd like to be near Providence, but not directly in it. We'd be renting not buying and we'd like to be in walking or biking distance to water. Are there any nice suburban type areas around Providence? I've read that East Providence is nice, is it a suburban type area or very city like. We don't want to be in the middle of nowhere or in a rural setting, just somewhere peaceful. I'm also interested in the North Kingstown/Wickford Village area. Any info/ opinions would be great. Thanks!!

Near water, near Providence........

In East Providence: Riverside, Boyden Heights, Rumford near the reservoir.
In Barrington: Barrington proper & West Barrington
In Warwick: Pawtuxet Village, parts of Edgewood (which also spills into Cranston). Further out: Cowessett.

A little further out:
Bristol
Warren

Further out than that is Wickford... also Swansea and Somerset Massachusetts- parts are near water.

All the above are more suburban than urban- and none are the boonies. Keep in mind that while distances are short as the crow flies in RI, there are a lot of bridges and consequent bottlenecks of traffic.

Get a detailed map of RI and see where the communities are near the water- then you can see how far out you'd want to be located.

There are only a few slum areas in RI that I would consider unsafe & the above aren't those areas.
Traffic is everywhere but I wouldn't stay it's too awful- just stay off I95 during rush hour and try not to give yourself a long commute!
