Kingston (where URI is located) is a village in the town of South Kingstown (don't get the tons mixed up with towns - only 2 towns, South and North Kingstown), Many professors (and professionals) live in The Oaks in PeaceDale (village in SK), Close to URI, check out Old North Rd (northern edge of campus), South Rd (just across highway from campus - lots of nice homes. Actually anywhere in South Kingstown, Wakefield, Peacedale, out to Usquepaug, Indian Lake Shores, on into North Kingstown are nice areas. Narragansett is nice too (a lot of students rent along 108 and into Narra because of the seasonal rental situation). Just find yourself a good realtor - there are many and no one particular one I would recommend over any other.
I wouldn't consider Westerly or Newport at all for distance. Westerly is at least a half hour drive and Newport is over 2 bridges and entirely a different part of the state - east bay. You'll be far better to stick to west bay and south county (which isn't really a county, but is a loosely defined area including most of southern RI (on the west bay) from somewhere in North Kingstown, some people say the dividing line is Ten Rod Rd/Wickford.
