large houses in Providence...are those single-family households or...?
Providence has so many large houses...are they single-family, or do they often divide them up and rent out back rooms or sections of the house, etc.?

This really is the best answer. Sometimes they're converted to rentals, and sometimes they aren't. It depends on neighborhoods, and the individual home.

Depends on the house. Sometimes they're rentals, sometimes they're converted to condos, sometimes they're single family. Heck, sometimes they're offices on the first floor and apartments/condos above. It all depends on the individual house more than even the neighborhood (though on the East Side you'll see more of them as single family than elsewhere in the city, but you honestly can't tell unless you look at the house itself (more than 1 mailbox is a good indication).

Hey, I like the 'offices' on the first floor concept of a house...does that mean that a person who owns a property can open a business on the first floor, and live upstairs?

It depends on how the property is zoned. In most cases the building is owned by the business (usually a doctor's or law office, some kind of professional work) and they rent the apartment(s) above.
