I am from Utah and moved to the DC area about 4 years ago. i miss the snow, and mountain biking. i have also always wanted to learn to surf. i have looked at the tax structure and would actually pay less there in RI. i like the opportunities i have found on line. i am an artist and my wife is a fiber artist. I am a laid back person with a very west coast love every one get to know them all attitude. with that said i find the further south i go the small towns are more akin to my taste of life. i find most people on the east coast have a what can you do for me attitude. rather then a lets get to know each other curiosity. I am looking for a environment with all of my love for nature and a Seattle like mind set. so far i see that in RI. i would bet those who dis like it are critical of others and not open to new experience. they would probably fit in down here in DC. if i am wrong pleas tell me so as i am seriously looking at moving to RI.also any comment on where to find cheaper apt or rent around 1000 for a three bed room, and where in the city is the local only secrets please e-mail me at john_mau@comcast.net ------thank you all------

^Check out Portland, Maine too. A bit smaller than Providence, but it has a strong artist community and is pretty cheap. oh yeah, there's plenty of snow and it's very laid back. Beautiful spot too.

There IS something in the water. The political action here shows that in spades. Even if you take the time to find out what govt processes are so very badly off track, and try to educate good people who you would think would want to listen, they scowl and traet you like you're the problem. And vote back in patently corrup people like nothing ever happened. The result: sky high taxes, especially the most unfair tax of them all, the property tax. Just when a family doesnt need it the most, if a breadwinner loses a job, or gets sick, that heavy property tax is right there added into the mortgage. $300, $400, $500 a month just for that one TAX, PLUS the actual mortgage. But tell that same person WHY the tax is so high, and HOW it gopt there, and WHO did it, and WHAT they can do to start to get better leadership, and watch how fast you dont get listened to and do get shunned. Yes, there IS something in the water because even newcomers get the same disease. It's a quaint place, with charm and lost of history. And it's patently corrupt at all levels, and the people just keep selecting the same scum to perpetuate the problem, over and over again.
Highest unemployment in the COUNTRY, Jack Welsh said businesses wont come here because of the tax and govt climate, housing costs out of whack for what can be earned. And if you present solutions expect to be shunned. Oh and the only state with unequal powers in the govt branches!
If you come here, be prepared to pay high taxes, watch it get wasted by petty, rude, and very often blatantly corrupt local and state officials, and not be able to do anything about it. If you dont mind $500/mo property taxes and a host of other high taxes and fees, or you can afford to pay, then the state has character, charm, and lots of variety as well as deep history. Just know the bad things and be ready to accept that because it will not change.
Oh and the people are cliquish and clanlike but usually direct and you can make friends and get hooked in without too much trouble. Every destination is mere minutes away. The dialects are countless. I lived in West Warwick and counted a half dozen in that one city alone, based in villages! You have to really lsiten and yes they are fading out as people move around more. But it's still there.
I've had 40 good years here though and it's time for someplace else.

I am considering relocation within my company to West Warick, RI. Does race play a factor within this city as to being excepted?

Rhode Island is a lot like Long Island, but not quite as expensive. Like anywhere, Rhode Island has people that love it and hate it. If you like Long Island, you should like Rhode Island. If you don't like Long Island, don't go to Rhode Island (unless your only problem with Long Island is the cost of living).
