You forgot to mention the suffocating anti-business regulatory environment.

The nightclub fire was a tragedy -- BUT one under-recognized effect it had was the new state fire code, which has put dozens, if not hundreds, of small businesses out of operation. I have heard several first-hand accounts from people who have had to shut down their businesses, because they could not afford to retro-fit old buildings with the type of sprinkler systems mandated, in knee-jerk "we must do SOMETHING" fashion, by the legislature. Sure, the fire code was well-intentioned -- but the lawmakers overreacted so badly that they've cost the state thousands of jobs, mostly in small businesses that were just scraping by to begin with -- people who can't just write a check for $50,000 or $100,000 to rip out walls, ceilings, and floors to put in a sprinkler system.

It would have been sufficient just to say, "All nightclubs have to have plenty of doors, and NO PYROTECHNICS ALLOWED." But no, they had to bend over backwards the other way, and put people out of businesses.

If you want to get the unemployment rate down, a good way to start would be to eliminate the Department of Business Regulation.....

You got that right! These stats are waaaaaaaaaaaay off. Rhode Island was recently ranked the 12th safest state in the Nation. I don't know what the median income here is, but the average family income is 53K, so you know that 35K stat is way off the mark.

They're relatively close to each other. They have a similar climate. They're both on the coast. Both have a Northeastern lifestyle.

It can't be described. It's just the feel you get when you're in the Northeast. Something along the lines of fast-paced, corporate, yuppie, cold (literally and figuratively).

You say that RI is forsook by God almighty? Brother, you must have really been let down by some folks there! I am sorry for all of that. You cannot really say that any place on this earth is forsaken by God, not yet anyway. I know what you are trying to say though. I am almost a Grandam, especially next to you! I have lived through some tough times. I have been without a dollar to my name, without many a friend too. In my 46 years, I will say that, "the best place to live is near your loved ones." Without your true friends, and loved ones all places seem God forsaken.

Well, I've only been to Long Island once, but I've lived in Rhode Island 5 and a half years now; and that is not the feeling I get at all.

Florida reminds me much more of that. (Where I lived for 20 years.) Rhode Island is much more homey and laidback in my opinion. (I know not everyone agrees, but I guess if everyone did it would be pretty boring.)

I have just followed Roger Williams to Rhode Island. Here in Rhode Island we have a lot more Religious Tolerance. You can practice any religion you want to. In Massachusetts I see that the Puritan Leaders do not allow people to question their religion, but here in Rhode Island you are free to follow the religion that you please. I would strongly recommend you and your family relocate to freely follow your faith. You will not regret it! I hope to see you here very soon.

The unemployment rate in RI is 13%. Taxes are through the roof. The State is operating in a deficit.

Cost of living is high whether you rent or own. Auto and health insurance rates are sky high. Want to live near the water, you'll need to get a second job just to pay for your homeowner's..........but wait,.....there aren't any jobs.

Honestly, unless you are being transferred by your employer, I can't see any reason for moving to RI.
