I moved to Rhode island 47 years ago and I love the state, but I have to admit that it is very hard to live here if you are on a fixed income. In the 47 years that I have been here I seen so many manufacturing companies leave that it is very sad and the influx of Illegals is getting worse and worse every day. I moved from Pittsburgh Pa. because i fell in love with the state and believe me you will to if you come to visit. But in the the near future this will be a welfare state. Don't listen to the bull that there is a lot of organized crime here and bad govenment because the cities all over this great country have the same probelems. I am lucky enough to live in a seaside area of the state and love it but I have to start thinking about maybe moving to Florida where there is no State income tax and i dont look forward to that.
If you are young and healthy and want to try it be my guest but make sure there is a job waiting for you here or you have to travel to Mass. or Conn. to work.
Good luck I hope I have helped.

Don't do it!
I am from Maine and have lived in Fl, Ct and now RI. I would have to say that Rhode is hands down the worst place to live.
1. Yes it has lots of coastline...however please do not think of swimming in the water. The ocean is so polluted (bacteria, discharge) here they close the beaches all the time in the Summer.
2. The infrastructure is horrible! I am not sure where all the tax money goes but really I've seen better planned and flatter roads driving down a dirt road to a camp. Most of the bridges have new weight restrictions as they are crumbling beneath drivers.
3. The people here are rude. Just flat out rude. I've never seen anything like it.
4. I drive 5 miles back and forth to work every day. What an awesome commute that should be! Yeah...NO. People here drive VERY aggresively, I've never seen anything like it up and down the east coast. There are car collision shops on every corner...at first I thought that was odd when I first moved here. Now I know why!
5. Bad food. My husband was so excited to take me to this "awesome home cooked chicken" place called Wrights Farm. Apparently it's an instituion around here and the locals love it as witnessed by the size of the place (huge) and long lines. They served baked chicken, salad, mashed potaoes and some pasta dish....that's it! And it's cooked horribly. Everyone raves about the place because it's all you can eat. That's one thing I've found...in RI when ever someone says "oh they have GREAT food!!" it's always followed by some version of the phrase "huge portions or all you can eat".
6. People are lazy and irresponsible. Normally if you can't make it into work one day you would do what is known as "calling out". I know this is the norm as this has been practiced in other states, places I have worked. RI...not so much. No call no show and then back to work 2 days later like nothing happened. At first I thought this was just a particular employee. No...this was going on with 5 of our employees...all from RI. All the other people who work with me do call in...and they are transplants like myself.
Geeesh...reading this I totally sound like I am on my high horse. I don't mean to....these are just my experiences...and I live in the "wealthy" part of RI. I'll be leaving RI soon...thank you Jesus!!!

Hi,
My husband and I were born and raised in RI.....we HAVE lived in other states, NY, MD, PA and TX. We came back 20 yrs ago and are now leaving for good. We are headed to NC. Yes, RI is beautiful, gorgeous beaches/coastline, wonderful and historic architecture, change of 4 seasons etc etc - HOWEVER > the state is in a mess, budget is in the toilet, taxes oppressive, nepotism in govt is an accepted perk. Could go on and on. We're glad to be getting out.

That seems to be the general consensus of many Rhode Islanders now. People just want to leave RI and they are in droves. The state is in a huge mess for all the reasons you stated and more. I too will be leaving as soon as I can. It's a shame to be living in such a beautiful place, and have to leave, but the corruptness of government has led to so many people fed up with the same old Bull year after year, election after election. Nothing ever changes and nothing ever will.

Rhode Island is actually ranked 25th in corruption according to Morgan Quitno studies. Texas and FL are both more corrupt than Rhody, yet the latter is where many flock to.
I'm afraid you will both find the housig problem being experienced here is the same all over. Unless you want to move to Montana that is.
And if that's the case, good riddance!

Do you by any chance work for the RI legislature?? And you are wrong- there are many places to move where you don't have to pay $5000 in taxes for a 2200 square foot house on an average sized lot. Or be taxed on your vehicles the amount we are and be taxed on Social Security benefits when you're on a fixed income. The RISDIC crises, the previous mayor, the former Providence Poilce Chief allowing certain people to pass promotion exams without testing. the former governor with his ties to Lincoln Park, but he was dead set against gambling in this state. Shall I go on??? Maybe there's other states higher up on the listfor corruption but per capita we have to be close to the top of the list. There's nothing wrong with loving the state you live in, but you are delusional if you think this is a wonderful place to live.

It was interesting reading your comments. I live in Queens, NY and have been offered a job in Pawtucket, RI. I am trying to find out about the place, perticularly about high schools there. Also about housing prices and taxes. Would like to buy a 3 bedroom house. Could anyone give some insight? Thanks.

Pawtucket has bad schools, a poor economy, high taxes and streets that have not been paved in forever. It is a former mill town that looks it. Not to say there are not some nice parts, though, it is just that the downtown area is beat. However, you could buy a 3 bedroom house in a decent neighborhood for under 250k. Although since you are coming from NY I suppose the taxes will be roughly the same.
