considering a new job in Woonsocket, RI. Trying to get a feel on the area. best places to live, schools etc.

Looking for a place with top schools (private is ok), access to nice parks, shopping, restaurants (both wifey and I are foodies). Basically looking for a good suburb with nice city to a city and a decent commute.

For housing, looking for 4 bedroom 2.5 bath 2500-3000 square feet, 2 car garage minimum. Budget $550 -$700k.

Any thoughts/ ideas where to start would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

You have a number of options, at least one of which is in Woonsocket itself. The historic north end neighborhood around Harris Avenue has some very nice homes. You'd probably be looking at a private school.

Consider Lincoln, RI, much of which is more suburban and has a lot of larger, more modern houses. You could utilize the Lincoln public schools. Also look at Cumberland and North Smithfield.

Woonsocket is a historic mill area which, frankly, has seen better days. It has a certain charm and is somewhat hilly in parts as well.
Woonsocket, RI (http://riroads.com/city/woonsocket.htm - broken link)

Although Woonsocket itself is a small sized city, the surrounding communities tend to be more suburban in character.

You might consider the east side of Providence since it's just 17 miles away. Again, you'd need to utilize private schools. Providence has plenty of restaurants of all varieties, as well as many other cultural offerings.

Thanks for the replies. I'll definitely check those out. I notice that every one you mentioned is in RI. I assume there really aren't any good southern MA options.

Doublesuited: Just wondering if you have been to Woonsocket yet and did you like the area in general? Your response would help to figure out what you'd like...

Been around Woonsocket, though not for the express purpose of looking for housing. From what I saw, it looked to be lower middle class without much in terms of shopping/dining. I might be wrong since i probably just saw a part of the town and not the best parts.

That is a pretty accurate assessment. It helps to know the history of this are and that of the nearby towns in MA.

Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor

You should explore Lincoln, as mentioned, also Barrington RI, and other more affluent communities in the region. Someone mentioned East Greenwich, that would be a 30-40 min commute.

You might like Wickford as well if you want a walkable downtown area and less suburban feel.

RI is such a mixed bag, I grew up in EG then NK (Wickford). Both are affluent towns. But you really cannot characterize a "town" per se, and most have a bad area, or at the very least, a variation in house size, lot size, house value, feel, distance to conveniences and more. If you describe what setting you are most attracted to then we natives would be able to get into a great conversation with you about your various options. In general, southern RI (south county - which is not really a county) is rural/suburban and more spread out and less developed, near beaches and water attractions and more. Western and Northern RI is rural with less attractions to offer. The Warwick-Pawtucket corridor is urban with numerous tucked-away neighborhoods, close to everything (except the southern coastline type places in south country), but has more of the 'issues' associated with an urban setting. Then there is the East Bay - acquidneck island, which is a tough commute to most jobs on the mainland, so you'd probably rule that out. You could check out Jamestown Island (Conanicus Is), which is an especially sweet spot - close to the good stuff, fairly reasonable commute northward, low taxes, and out of the way. But home prices are quite a bit higher.

What you lookin for?
