Well, it's that time of year again when I see the cholos landscaping boys from Zacatecas, Culiacan and whatnot working on the fancy RI homes around here.

Now to me every Xichano is a brother in arms! I say viva Che, viva La Raza all the way baby, and pass me some Mate and a big fat joint too!! Orale, Surenos cafes!

But then again I'm also an unemployed Rhode Islander right now (um, well actually I just supposedly lined up a crappy little seasonal low-pay job for the summer...).

I start REALLY TRYING to reconcile these troublesome and contradictory sentiments.

WELL, I am supposed to be HAPPY or PISSED that according to our dear local news media the MASSIVELY FLOODED WARWICK MALL is being cleaned-up BY OUT-OF-STATE (from Florida of course!) crews of young latino men.

Is this why I haven't seen any help wanted ads for flood cleanup work on Craigslist, JobsInRI, etc??? (The absence of which I find quite strange and interesting).

Look folks I understand how this happens, the owner of the Mall probably took the cheapest, cheapest clean-up bid he could find.

I hope somebody has checked all of these workers employment and work visa documentation for legitimacy. But I doubt that's happened, probably more likely a few bribes paid here and there.

Just like in Russia, Afghanistan, Mexico or the USA.

I hear those flood waters had a lot of sewage in them!

It's 10 bucks and hour to clean up warwick mall and it's mostly young adults and such. I know a bunch of people who went to manpower for the job.

Pretty sure the management uses Servpro to work on the cleanup. They've got a franchise in Warwick, call them up and ask if you can help!

Meanwhile, there must be other crews than the Servpro boys working there, too. It would make sense if some of the tenants there employ their own crews.

I fail to see what this issue has to do with immigrant workers and unemployment. It's a big job and the contract will go out to the company which has the resources and the manpower and offers the best deal. I'd be surprised if Servpro employs large amounts of illegal immigrants.

But then, I might be wrong.

Good luck with your job search.

I just saw this as the first post, I'm not from Rhode Island and never been but there have to say this. In my hometown, New Orleans, entire armies of illegal Mexicans and others came to rebuidl after Katrina. Most of them have never left. I hear the same is happening in Biloxi, Mississippi and other coastal cities. Many white and black Americans now haven't returned, especially blue collar people because the jobs have now been taken by the illegals. I'm not sure but I've heard there were deals with Mexico to give some illegals citizenship if they came to New Orleans or Biloxi after Katrina. In a disaster like this they shoulda hired American contractors and subsdizied it with disaster aid. Honest to God I'm okay with paying taxes to help my fellow Americans rebuild especially compared to pay for ACORN and socialist health care.

My family are legal Asian immigrants we are not rich but we are proud of what we have, we're not ahead but we have enough adn we're glad like Justin Moore's song says. I despise socialism because my father lived through the communist revolution in China when he was 4 years old and had to flee his home. We love this country and will always defend it. We believe in American and Christian values. We have nothing to do with those illegals from around the world who come here and refuse to assimilate and take advantage of our country. I do know your governments up in the Northeast are very tolerant of illegals. People up there need to wake up and stop voting liberals into office because that eventually impacts the whole country. Things like illegal immigration trickles down to other states where we don't want it. Illegals are especially an issue if a lot come into a state at once and they don't have a chance to assimilate. Where I live now, in Baltimore there are illegals but they are concentrated in one neighborhood (which was previously Greek immigrants who have now assimilated and moved to the suburbs like the Italians before them). Here there is more hope of the Mexicans doing the same and "graduating" from the inner city and moving out to greener pastures outside.

Thanks for the input, people. What got me hot under the collar was the news article I read had a photo of one of the Warwick Mall ServPro crews and it was 10 young men, all of them clearly Latinos. (Yes, every single one of them.) Also the fact that they are allowed to truck these workers in from Florida at a time when about 70,000 able-bodied people in RI can't find work !!

I think you are incredibly naive, GermanSpy. A lot of Americans such as yourself really need to wake the heck up!

I DID see a couple of help wanted ads (only on Craigslist) placed by Temporary companies such as Adecco Staffing, I think it was, for clean-up work.

I decided years ago that I would have NOTHING further to do with Temporary Staffing companies. (For a number of reasons.) But if this unemployment keeps up I might have to change my mind so thanks for the info, folks.

Here's a bit of info for you... RI is full of LEGAL Latinos who need and deserve the jobs just as much as white people. Do you have proof that they are being trucked in from Florida? Do you have proof that they're illegal?

And do you really have a right to complain if you're purposely avoiding one of the best ways to get a job... temp agencies?

Hey, for all you know, I could be an illegal immigrant cleaning up the Warwick Mall! Taking your work, one shovel at a time!

Nice: Cholo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Surely there's a better way to vent your disgust.

And, I really do understand your anger. My other half has been unemployed for almost six months with no end in sight. If you feel this way (and, again, I really don't blame you), why don't you make that "someone" you, and follow up with immigration?

Best of luck in your job search; I hope you get something soon.

Don't worry, now that the run of great weather has been disrupted, Pohdncrzy will go back to complaining about that instead.

Okay, guys, I did a little research on ServPro. They are not an employment agency. They are a disaster cleanup company.

I DO have evidence that the workers are being "trucked" in from Florida.

I am going to investigate this further. Will post results.

BTW, cholos is a term of endearment in my culture, much like "cabr0n". I am not Latino myself but my religion is a syncretic one, "The Church of Cheech and Chong", and includes aspects of the Latino "lowrider" subculture, primarily from the East Whittier Boulevard section of Los Angeles and also a small contingent from The Club Mecca in Chicago.

Yes, things are tough all over right now. I will get to the bottom of this. Could be the start of a new career in investigative gonzo journalism!
