Well, I think its just that she had some bad experiences. She went to John Marshall High School and they weren't very nice to her. So she transfered to Thomas Jefferson.

Church Hill is not that bad if you live south of Broad St.
North of that its pretty dangerous. But I know people who live out there and have no trouble at all.
The Fan is safer overall though.

You guys seem to be a positive group....so i am reposting this here!!
Hi! I am currently interviewing for a job in Richmond (specifically Shockoe). I grew up in the suburbs surrounding Detorit.
I am hoping to be asked down to Richmond for an interview. Until then, I have been looking at apartments online (in great hope of actually getting the job).
I am 25/F. I am looking for an apartment in a fun area that attracts young professionals (23-40). From reading other posts, richmond (like most cities) has bad areas. I am obviously looking to avoid those. I have seen many loft in Shockoe, and the west end (planet zero, river lofts at tobacco row and so on). I love what i am seeing from the photo's, but would like some opinions on the area. I am willing to have a 20min. drive to work. it is more important for me to be in an area where i can meet people.
Thanks!!!

Check out parts of the Fan or try Shockoe Slip/Shockoe Bottom/Tobacco Row. Good areas to meet people and if you could even walk to work instead of driving!
Also, check this out, especially if you move to town... great way to network with young professionals and meet new people too!

I've lived in both places and while Raleigh is ok, Richmond is far better IMO. Traffic in Richmond is much better.

I'd say they are fairly safe. Obviously, most urban areas aren't as safe as a cookie-cutter neighborhood in "anywhere USA" suburbia, but overall I'd feel perfectly comfortable living there. I've spent considerable time in all areas I mentioned and have never once found myself fearing my safety, day or night. Shockoe Bottom comes across as somewhat gritty, but there's some great living spaces, great restaurants, and great nightlife all a walk away.

I have lived in Raleigh for the past 13 years and I can honestly say that Richmond BLOWS Raleigh away. I think I may seriously consider relocating to Richmond. Far more beautiful and far more things to do in Richmond than in Raleigh.
