Probably meeting up with some friends this weekend for dinner in Richmond (maybe Williamsburg?). I'm looking for some suggestions for cool or unique places to get something for dinner. No chains, please, we're looking to get some local flavor.

Thanks!

Millies, LuLus, Black Sheep, Tarrants, Can Can, Mama Zu, Edo's Squid... just to hit a few, Richmond has a ton of great restaurants.

You can add Bistro 27 and Comfort to that list.

A second shoutout for Tarrant's - the shecrab soup is awesome.

In addition to the great responses above, here's a hidden gem - Cafe Rustica.
Bouchon is a French Bistro in Shockoe Slip that is good
Acacia midtown
Balliceaux for a very unique atmosphere
La Grotta - fine Italian, I'm more partial to Mama su's and Edo's Squid, but they are fine Italian in a "dive" setting.
For a uniquely Richmond atmosphere = The Tobacco Company
The Boathouse at Rockett's Landing has fantastic views of the river

If you end up in Williamsburg = Fat Canary

And some others - didn't mention a price range or setting, so -

Kuba Kuba
Buz & Ned's BBQ
Mekong - Vietnamese
Azziza's on Main
Six Burner
Bacchus

I'd seriously check out Balliceaux. It has the most "special" feel of any of the places mentioned. Edo's Squid, Can Can and Mama Zu are also very specific feeling (and the food is good). The Boathouse is nice for late afternoon (the light is amazing) but I find the decor a bit cheesy 90's looking. Comfort is very Richmond and comfortable but for me that’s a weekday, not weekend, kind of destination.
Really it's hard to go too terribly wrong in Richmond. I’d be super happy to eat at any of the places mentioned so far!!

If you want local flavor around Williamsburg there's Pierce's Pit BBQ. Not fancy but authentic. A bit more upscale there would be The Trellis, long famous for its "Death by Chocolate" dessert.

Great suggestions! +rep for you

I'd also have to add sticky rice and Bottoms Up (and Can Can for like an anniversary or something)
