VA for their own Pro Team
Richmond would be my top pick to place a big franchised team. Right in the middle and can draw in people from ALL over and take some of the craziness away from DC as far as Nats, Skins, Caps,Wizards. We dont have anything. Even the airports in NOVA are washington Dulles....WAY outside of dulles and national...on the VA side looking at DC...so i guess thats close enough. But back to teams Yay or Nay for team, and location?

Which sport are you talking about? ... football and baseball wouldn't have a chance in Richmond IMO.

it would be nice to have a pro football or basketball team in the 804 area, but i think more fans would support something like that in the tidewater area.

Richmond is pretty diehard Redskins territory, but there doesn't seem to be a broad loyalty to any NBA team in particular...

You'll be in what is mostly Redskins and Nationals/Braves territory, but you probably won't be alone since there are a lot of northern transplants in the Richmond area.

Well look at the Richmond Coliseum compared to the city, now look at it compared to other coliseums. No one would want to rep that and I think the city has its own money issues

Why build some overpriced ego palace in the slim to none chance of somehow landing an NBA team when those hundreds of millions of dollars could be spent on so many other worthier things?
Financially, the city has a strong bond rating, but lacks the kind of cash flow the counties enjoy given Virginia's rigid independent city structure. The city carries a greater burden of providing services, while have a greater proportion of poverty which is common with urban areas. Less for more isn't as good as more for less... This is where greater efforts towards regionalism would pay off.

I've lived in some cities with some pretty major teams - football, basketball, baseball, soccer. I can tell you that it is a double edged sword. Yes it does draw a name recognition to the city, however it can put the city in a tight financial spot to 'deliver' a new/custom playing field for the team. This can draw money away from basic needs of the citizens. I've seen this in Oakland, San Francisco, Portland etc. Many cities lose their teams after a number of years because they are not willing to put up with the extortion tactics of the team owners. Note: - SF 49ers are moving to Cupertino (40 mi south), Oakland Athletics are moving to Fremont (20 mi south), the SF Warriors first moved to Oakland, then changed their name to the Golden State Warriors. San Francisco used to have a hockey team and basketball team within the city boundries, no more- too expensive.
Like I said it's double edged - you get the recognition and money but at a high price.
