No offense to my fave city and all, but those ridiculous historical buildings are eyesores indeed and need to be demolished. JUST THINK ABOUT ALL THE SKYSCRAPERS WE CAN BUILD!!!! Reusing old worn out buildings aren't the answer to a perfect city. Thats just my 2 cents on historic Richmond.....

Well I'm not a finacial expert or anything but that was just imo. Good to hear the streets and sidewalks are being redone. I think that coliseum design might be a little too modern looking though for Richmond and the location, or is it just me?

The good (and bad) thing about Richmond is that there are plenty of undeveloped and underdeveloped parcels (think surface lots and 1-3 story parking decks) in the urban core that we need to redevelop before we even START thinking about tearing any more of our historical buildings down.

If you're into urban planning, you should read up on Jane Jacobs. She makes a pretty compelling case for historic preservation in the context of modern urban development.

Yeah...the new coliseum design isn't really much to look at. Its not bad but its definitely not good. The good news is that its just a preliminary design of what a new stadium within that price range could look like. But if anything gets build it probably won't look anything like that.

But, believe it or not, I think Richmond kinda needs a nice, super modern looking arena. Richmond doesn't really have any kind of signature, contemporary work of civic architecture. But functionality is most important.

Something like this would be cool:

Its being built in Lincoln Nebraska for $168million (a little more than what was proposed for here). Its 'modern' enough with soaring glass atrium and more contemporary form, but it still relates with more classic architecture of the area with brick facades at street-level.

FYI, Re: The Lincoln Nebraska proposal.

Lincoln is very comparable to Richmond. In size (Lincoln about 40,000 more in the city, but its metro is about 1/4 of the Richmond metro, so Richmond, for all intents is MUCH bigger). The economies are similar (government, university, and medical). The Richmond metro's median household income is ~15% higher. If Lincoln can pull it off, Richmond should be able to.

Yeah I always imagined it being made of bricks firstly and perhaps a lot of glass since there are a lot more of those type buildings around in the area.

I was shocked to see that it only held 13,000 at most, and only 12,000 for basketball. Ive never been in it but I thought it had 18,000 at least with having an upper deck.

Norfolk still has the Norfolk Scope and Hampton Coliseum, both around the same size.

I dont know, its hard to convince for any updating when you dont have a big college basketball team or NBA team playing there.

Whatever Richmond decides to do, it should partner with VCU. VCU is a big enough school to have a facility larger than the Siegel Center.
