We easily filled a day and a half. Had a lot of fun! We arrived early afternoon on Wed. and toured the Capitol after checking in to the hotel. Marveled at the outside in inside architecture of the Old City Hall building. Walked to dinner, back to the hotel and then took in a Flying Squirrels game.
Thursday we spent hours at the Tredegar Iron Works, Museum of the Confederacy, and Confederate White House. We drove to Carytown and walked a bit. Checked out a few shops, stopped for dinner, then dessert, and saw a movie at the Byrd Theater (awesome place), before heading home. There were only a few negatives, but overall it was a fun time.

Glad you had a good time! Out of curiosity, what were the negatives?

They were pretty minor. Things you would run into any place you go. A couple things stood out to us. For the most part we walked, but the roads in and around downtown were very rough. The amount of trash on the streets and sidewalks, and the number of panhandlers in "better" areas surprised us. It was a good trip though, my 11 year old son enjoyed it. There are things we didn't get to do in the time we had that we'll have to check out at another time.

The roads are beyond bad. I think the city's doing a ton of infrastructure work before they pave. We have the world road cycling championships here in 2015, so things have to be fixed up by then. Then there's all the construction (renovations, building, etc), which is a really good thing, but is also really annoying too.

I'm surprised about the trash, that's usually not the case, but I suppose it depends on where you were.

Thanks for your feedback!

It was particularly bad in the Carytown neighborhood.

That makes sense, with all the stores/restaurants. For some reason, I was thinking downtown and was surprised because the city does pretty good with trash pickup (especially in the financial district). I was recently in Santo Domingo for a few nights and was shocked at how much litter there was everywhere. When I came back to Richmond, I was fascinated at how clean the streets were, but had never thought twice about it.

I've noticed Carytown sometimes has too much litter. I think the merchants should look into something similar to what they have downtown (or expand it to cover Carytown).
