Greetings from Northern Va.

The wife has Friday off and we at first were going to go into DC to and visit some museums or something. We're now thinking of coming down to Richmond for the day, stay the night and come home on Sat.
Any suggestions for sights we should see would be appreciated. It's been a long time since we've seen any sights in Richmond. We're not really into the Art type museums. Also, any suggestions on hotels in nicer areas? We don't need something like the Hotel Jefferson but something in a low crime area would be nice.
Street names would be helpful for anything but I'll have my GPS to help find things.

Thanks in advance.

Looks like a good place to visit. More suggestions would be nice as we'll have both Friday and Sat there.

Hotel Sierra is a nice, new hotel at Short Pump Town Center--not sure if you are interested in staying at a mall in the suburbs. Very convenient for dining. I know the Westin is very nice too. Just depends where you want to be. Look on tripadvisor or travelocity for more ideas if no one else has recommendations.

Consider staying at the Omni or Berkeley Hotel in Shockoe Slip on Cary Street. Good dining options nearby and during the day you aren't too far from some historical sites like St. John's Church in Church Hill or the Capitol building designed by Thomas Jefferson. The Capitol is free to enter and tour on your own. With the weather being so nice though the Maymont suggestion is a good one and hiking around Belle Isle and sitting on the rocks overlooking the rapids would be pleasant as well. Also visit Carytown to the west for some unique shopping and dining options. Hope you enjoy your visit!

You may not be into art museums, but the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is hosting a fantastic Picasso collection which opens this Saturday. It may be worth it.

You should go to Carytown!! I like the Virginia Historical Society in the city, it's free and it's such a complete catalog of VA history. I second the Capitol building, very cool! St John's Church is awesome and if you were here in March, I'd say go see the reenactment of the Patrick Henry "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" speech but you're still a bit early for that.
