I agree. Unfortunately, the current arrangement generates some very strong links in certain areas (western Henrico, Route 288 portion of Chesterfield, West End of Richmond) while also fostering fairly weak links (eastern Henrico, East End of Richmond, tri-cities/Petersburg).
The region has convinced itself that it can overcome weak links by focusing more effort on its stronger links.
Many (myself included) don't think that philosophy is working.

Do you think all those people out in the suburbs want some nasty blue-collar city workers hopping on a train and coming out to the Short Pump Mall? People move out to get away from all of that bull$h!t.
Richmond can't be like Korea, Japan or China with these lightening fast trains that can get you anywhere. We will always have cars, because we want to keep distance from certain types of people.

Tell "all those people" the Cityhopper cites a better transportation system as a way for all locals to drive less and RIDE more. Given the heighten amount of traffic RVA has due to I-95 and I-295, it would be slightly kinder to the earth for local transporatation. Cityhopper would also like to cite that these "nasty blue-collar" workers are not all criminals but we are sure oleo will refute this claim.

Cityhopper is constantly wondering how you are categorzing "we". I believe I understand that oleo is one of the types that always likes to see things just the same as yesterday. Even when change can help someone else, as long as oleo's stomach is full, that is all that matters.*

As long as Richmond perpetuates an attitude similar to oleo's, the young and talented will continue to bypass the City as a place to call home or a last option for university studies (this is not to disrespect the Uni's itself but the environment overall). Which after they complete their studies or internships, they will take their talent elsewhere. Trust me they are not leaving because of the "nasty blue collar" workers.....

In response to the question, I have lived in several states, but am currently back in VA - in the Shenandoah Valley which I enjoy much better than the city.

Winter only lasts January and February? Guess again. Expect the cold weather to start October and last through March and into beginning of April.
Since you are coming from Florida the one or two days of bitter cold from a Florida cold snap lasts on the order of months here.

The winters are generally just 2 months here- January and February. After that you're in the clear. I have never seen snow here in March- it would be rare if happens.
When it does snow here, though- things kinda- shut down. Richmonders don't like driving in snow. Everyone will rush to the market. My friends from up north find that hilarious. I don't think it is. I hate driving in snow as well.
If you like the ocean and mountains- yer in luck. You're less than 2 hours from both.

Depends on your perspective I guess. I certainly define winter as January and February mainly. You can get days in the 80's in November and March. Most people wouldn't consider that too winter-like
