You said you haven't lived here in 8 years let me warn you there have been lots of changes. We've lived here for 20 years and I get very frustrated with the traffic. I live north of Charlotte, in the Lake Norman area. Everything is so congested and it's the same south of Charlotte.
Charlotte is a clean and beautiful city. Familiarity brings comfort so leaving here will be tough. There are a lot of transplants here, us being one. We moved here from Chicago, Il. Over the past 15 years, it seems that a lot of people from NY and NJ dominate the area.
It will be an adjustment for my husband and I when we move to Richmond. Will we be homesick, most definitely. Do we have a choice, no. Will we try to make the best of what Richmond has to offer, yes. To do otherwise, would make us miserable.
Charlotte, is far from the perfect city, so you may be in for a few surprises when you move back.

Richmond is a beautiful city. Charlotte is the city equivalent of a shopping mall.
Richmond is far from perfect, but its not the hell hole you describe it to be. There's lots of opporunities here. Honestly, I have met many more people that love Richmond than don't love it- and I'm not talking about old Richmonders.
I'm talking about people who move here from all over. When you all come to Richmond, I personally can take you on a tour of the wonderful sites and treasures of our fair city.

Have to chime in about the West Enders. We moved here a year ago from NY...my sister recommended the West End. Talk about a bunch of high and mighty snobs! I think life here in the West End has generally clouded my perspective of Richmond altogether. I work in Midlothian and the people down there are a totally different group....more of the southern hospitality that you would expect to find in Virginia. The West Enders are the snobbiest, rudest bunch of people I've ever lived among....I'm embarrassed to tell people I live here.
The funny thing about the West End.....the most crowded store here in the West End on a Saturday afternoon....Walmart!

The West End has always been snobby. But the 'West End" you're probably talking about is not considered the real West End by Richmonders. Old Richmonders don't consider Henrico County part of Richmond. Its the suburbs. The real West End is the Fan and West Hampton and ends at U. of Richmond- or "Rivah" Rd.
The "West End" people refer to now is just suburbs and sub divisions with mostly people who aren't from Richmond. Every town has it like that. There's always a snob part of town. I bet you a million $$ that Charlotte has the same thing. And you'll find lots of southern hospitality if you belong to the Country Club of Virginia.

The CCV defines snobby
Wanderlost, as for your observations about westenders, you sound like a born n bread Richmonder (not from the West End) yourself! I know the feeling sometimes as I've spent much of my time south of the Rivah.

I don't want to offend anyone here, but my family always viewed those who lived south of the Rivah as a little on Bubba side (with the exception of Bon Air). And people on the North Side were new money and tacky- like the Gottwalds, etc. The place "to live" was in between Monument Ave in the Fan and east of the Boulevard from Park Ave on down to Grove. Living on Monument Ave was too flashy. Floyd Ave was also considered working class, and Oregon Hill was and still is that way .
Now this was Richmonder's perspective during the 1920s and 1930s.
Neighbordhoods change , and in this case change is a good thing.

Your families views are one of the things I happen to dislike about Richmond. I think the whole territorial thing is silly.

True. But its not just Richmond, its all over. The things people find fault with in Richmond they could find in any town or city . These are universal things.
London has always had the same thing. People living within chimes of Big Ben are considered "Cockney".

I'm a DC native, but I went to undergrad in the Charlotte area and now go to law school in Williamsburg. I came across this thread while googling to see what the reason is that ukrop closes on Sunday (I wondered if there is any admission of the Church thing or if it's just to take a general sabbath). I wanted to throw in there that I'm a Moslem, yet I'm quite pleased to see that Ukrop closes on Sundays. It shows that they like to stick to their beliefs more than they like making money. I also like that they don't sell alcohol - putting it in a grocery store is all too tempting to alcoholics who are trying to recover, this gives them an option to escape that many markets wouldn't offer. To those who think it's a model that wouldn't work in a more "progressive" market, need I say Chik-fil-a?

I haven't lived there for the past year and a half, and I remember the traffic. Actually, I just got back from the Pats/Panthers game this weekend. Man, do I miss Charlotte. That place has grown just in the past year or so as well. All the newness there has me counting down the days.
