Default Is there a lot of crime in the outside of Richmond?

We are seriously thinking about relocating to Ashland, VA which is on the outside of Richmond, how is the crime just outside of richmond? Any weekly/monthly robberies on the news/in newspapers...killings? We have a 17 month old girl and one on the way so we're looking for a peaceful environment...

...Thank you so much for helping

Ashland is cool. Just don't live too close to the RR tracks.

I heard not long ago that Midlothian was one of the top places to live, and it is a suburb outside of Richmond...stay out of the city, esp at night, and you will be safer, but there is no place, even where I live that is 100 percent safe...and you can at times live near a RR track and be safe, it really depends on the area, for example, where I live, almost everyone lives near one or close to one...however Richmond might be different!~ Best of luck to you!

Default What I know about Richmond

I've been here since August 1, 2006!!!

Umm..what can I say....If you've seen Detroit, you have seen Richmond!! Whoever the city planners were copied from one another! Although I must commend VCU for what it's doing to build up the VCU area, it's still suffering. Broad St. in particular. One word comes to mind when I look at a stretch of these buildings...blight!!! From downtown over the Manchester Bridge...why would anyone want to go over there.....

Live inside of Richmond only if you like or need the city conveniences. There are some areas in Richmond that are decents. Some areas on the southside are nice. I've been through Chesterfield, and it's nice. I love Glen Allen, but you have to have deep pockets for Glen Allen. There are other parts of Henrico county that are decent as well.

I drove through Ashland/Hanover today...only part of it. Did not get as far as the "railroad" tracks. It seems like a nice little city.

I love driving on I-95 and down Brook Road, seeing the trees instead of poles, signs and wires is very soothing. The scenery here is nice. If you work or have to go to the city, you deal with the city, but it seems that you can carve out a peace of mind in the country. For Richmond, the rural areas are not that far away at all.

I am having a hard time finding a fruit market and a meat market.... I can't pay $4.00 for a papaya at Kroger or Food Lion.

I moved here because the unemployment rate is very low. I was assured that I would not have a problem finding a job...Guess what!!!!! I don't have a job yet!!!!!!!!!!!!! Huh...what was that...which field do I work in....Information Technology with a BA degree in I.T. and still no job....this SUCKS!!!

So....so far....so good. I just have to get used to not having all the conveniences of Michigan. But, everything is a trade off.

Musicnote,
I am also from IT field, Just wanted to know How is your Job search coming along. Outside Downtown where else are IT job sites.
Which area to live in makes sense from Commute/safe neighbourhood point of view.

Are there plenty IT jobs in Richmond area?

Thanks
lxs
