I think Varina might be more what the OP is looking for if they want inexpensive suburban living close to the city. It's almost a country feel but you can find relatively cheap single-family housing (compared to the West End and most of Chesterfield). And it's literally a five to ten minute drive into downtown, and convenient to a nice, new shopping center complex on Laburnum Ave.

Agree with bdmckinleys description of church hill. I'd throw in that Richmond has 2 kinds of "urban" experiences that people like the OP would favor. One is the church hill/shockoe/jackson ward one, the other is the fan/museum/byrd park one. Both are valid, but most will prefer one or the other.

There are lots of other nice neighborhoods in richmond, but they are more "streetcar suburbs" type. Examples would be Forest Hills, Westover Hills, the West End, Bellevue, etc. Etc.

I guess it is all about what you are looking for , My family lives in church hill and I have three kids. We love it here. We see living in the city as a new adventure and we are really enjoying walking down the street for coffee and cookies. We LOVE this place and we live past clay street, we went out walking two nights ago after dark "with all our kids" and we loved it. Church hill is really coming around with all the Renovations it is also only 6 miles to the air port. And there are all your usual chain restaurants and stores if you like those as well. I feel like it is the best of both, and we have a great home for a good price.

I would agree with most posters here. Church Hill is majority questionable. There are a few nice spots in Church Hill to live though and the scenery of the city (as seen in my YouTube video in another thread) is taken right from Church Hill.

Speaking of old... Are you referencing this dubious article from WalletPop 3 years ago?

Church Hill called 10th Most Dangerous Neighborhood in America?!? ‹ Church Hill People's News

The area they chose to call "Church Hill" is north of Cedar Street (technically part of Church Hill North). It's steadily improving but the area near St John's Church is much more established.

church hill would be cute if it werent so run down. some of the row houses have a lot of potential. i drove through the "bad part" a few months ago with a friend from out of town. i warned her that we were about to drive through "the hood" but she commented later that it wasn't that bad. it may have just been the time of day, though, since we drove through on a sunday morning. i generally try to avoid the area if possible
