Want to fling in there: don't limit yourself only to pool neighborhoods. There are several 'associations' in the West End and down in Chesterfield.

Basically it's typically a private athletic club that consists of only a nice outdoor pool w/lifeguard service, some extra picnic facilities, and maybe tennis, usually has a little junk food vendor, and is open around the right dates to use the pool.

Agreed. The advantage of pool neighborhoods, though, is it is easy to meet your neighbors in the summer and neighborhood pools foster a sense of neighborhood community. Also, it is nice to take your kids to the pool and know they will know the kids there because they go to school with them. More important with younger kids, IMO. Also, there really aren't a lot of associations on the north side of Broad St. (lots on the south side). If you live in 23059, for example, your options are fairly limited if you don't live in a pool neighborhood or want to join the Dominion Club. I wish the YMCAs had outdoor pools here (I know some do, but they are few and far between).
