I loooove Richmond and we're thinking of getting away from the craziness that is DC and moving there next year. The only thing I'll miss is the culture here. Well, as long as I can get Indian/Thai/Chinese food, I'm happy.

Richmond just seems like the perfect size for us. We have a 4 month old right now and are looking at areas with families. We'll probably rent at first.

Can anyone tell me what parts of Richmond to avoid? What are areas with a lot of crime? I want to live somewhere safe but no more than 5-10 minutes from the city. Also, I know VCU is a big school but we don't want to live around a lot of college kids. Though it doesn't strike me as a college town like Blacksburg where we went to school.

Thank you!!

I would look in the Near West End near Mary Munford Elementary School. You're still in the city, but has more of a suburban feel. You could rent a house w/ a yard. Might want to consider the Westover Hills section, too. That's south of the river, but still in the city. Again, more of a suburban feel.

I agree with Sparrowgirl, if you can afford a private school then I suggest Westover Hills or Forest Hill. You could also try the near west end, as she also said, or even the Museum District which borders the Fan and is within the city but still sort of has that suburban feel to it with small yards and some space between houses.

Areas to avoid... you'll know when you see them. I recommend you come down and drive around the areas we listed and see which you prefer. If you don't mind being 20-30 mins from the city then try Short Pump which everyone from NoVA loves, or Midlothian.

Also want to add that Mary Munford ES is a great city school. (I'm not that familiar w/ schools in Westover Hills.) But I think most people do the private route after that.

Also depends on your budget... rent or purchase?

Would like to purchase, but there's no way we're selling our condo in nova right now. We'll have to rent (1200 max) since we'll probably still have to dish out some $$ for our nova mortgage even with renting it out.
