Default Has anyone ever noticed a sewer smell from Richmond, Virginia.

So when you drive on I-95 through Richmond, Virginia. Sometimes you will smell this odor, now the odor is kinda strong. It has a strong sewer smell to it, and you can smell it occasionally. I don't know if Richmond has a sewer plant near the interstate, but i was just wandering if anyone else has ever noticed it.

yea right around exit 69 on 95. there are a lot of factories there (phillip morris?) so i wonder if thats why. there are a few patches along 95 in NC (around 173 is one) that smell like rotting flesh. i can't decide which is worse

The city's main wastewater treatment facility is just east of I-95 just south of the river... it is downriver and downwind from the city.

See map:
brander street, richmond, va - Google Maps

I also believe there is a paper mill near exit 69.

Thats the paper mill not the wastewater treatment. The wastewater facility gets blamed all the time.

Oh it smells like that on just about every street in Richmond. Most Richmonders are just use to it, maybe some even like it? I heard the smell is spreading out to the counties too. I think people should be more concerned.

I think people should be more concerned too. I love Richmond but I worry a lot about the pollution here. Ever seen the smoke billowing out of Hopewell? Disgusting, as is the smell off of 95. Scary.

Probably the Smithfield pig factory. I say factory because that's pretty much what it is haha. It smells like that because of the HUGE pig poop lagoons that are filled with not only poop but dead pigs that fall through the grates. Pretty nasty if you ask me
