I don't understand why northeners are called "transplants". I live in NJ and we don't call anyone transplants and we have everyone from everywhere here and never call them that. What's with VA and that phrase? I am really starting to believe what I am reading about native Virginians. Little chip on their shoulders it sounds like.

Well Deb I'm in TX and they call everyone that was not born in the Dallas area transplants, so I do not think that it is just VA. It is what it is. I personally wouldn't read into it too much...just mho.

I am from Arizona and almost everyone in our area comes from another state. We refer to our city as a transplant town. I agree, it tends to be common term used in areas that have a lot of people moving in from all over the country.

It's not really a condescending term.

Since so many people move into and out of the area, the term 'transplant' isn't used in an offencive way. (Generally) There is a lot of military from VA Beach to DC, which means that there are a lot of transplants from base realignments and such. Also the job market is so good that a lot of people come from other areas to work around here. It's generally not seen as a bad thing when someone from another part of the country moves here.

Chesterfield County is highly populated and has a high crime rate compared to the rest of the area. I would have to say that Mechanicsville is probably not where you want to live if you are concerned about this subject, as so many people there know each other. The Fan and West End both have a high transplant rate due to the college and business influences.

We moved here from the UK and were welcomed by everyone we met. We live in Woodlake which is in Cosby High area - very diverse, lots of "transplants" here. (We are also in our 30's) I love the area and schools and the best - prefer them to UK public schools. If I had a choice, we would never leave but are being relocated to Virginia Beach. The houses here are affordable and wide price range. Woodlake, ranges from mid 200s to 800 depending on whether it is a waterfront property - great community spirit and facilities.

I think many people resent "transplants" because they represent new development, traffic congestion and higher taxes. They fuel the need for needless commercial sprawl in terms of box stores and fast food joints. How many nail parlors can one area tolerate. How many lawn care companies are required? Sure they create minimum wage jobs which go unfilled until illegal transplants fill them. There is also a serious environmental impacts on the impacted areas.
