Probably the far west-end, near the short pump mall. (Near where 295 ends at I-64, WEST of Richmond) That whole area is pretty high end.

here's my opinion
the midlothian/salisbury area is just as nice as glen-allen, but not as crowded. The schools are also better in my opinoin. It's funny that all the people from glen allen or the west end in general turn their nose up at the southside areas. Ironically though, reports you can find online show that per household, the average income per family is actually higher in the salisbury area then in the glen allen area. Not to mention salisbury is connected to midlothian high school which has the bacaloreate program (sp?). It's an advanced program for high school students that generally lands them in acceptance letter to the ivy league school of their choice.
If you really want upscale, windsor farms is the place. Any one would tell you that. very pricey and everyone sends their kids to private schools because it's in richmond city.
My opinion is that the old gun cherokee are is the prettiest place around. half of that area is in chesterfield county. Clarkes forge is a relatively new neighborhood off old gun and it's fabulous!!!!!!. I think the houses start around 800,000 and go up. it's a small nieghborhood with families My family's house is across the street on old gun and it's very nice. Not in a neighborhood though. Generally houses in our are are 1,000,000 and up. It's just nice becasue you don't feel crowded there like you would in glen-allen or maybe even in salisbury. Don't buy anything until you look at this are: trust me.
Happy Hunting.

I wouldn't call the Midlothian area 'south-side'... if you look at a map, it's more west of downtown Richmond than the 'west end' even is. I'd say midlothian down to the area around the swift creek lake is more middle class than anything. I could see how the average income is higher there, but I think that might have to do with the Powhite parkway, allowing people to use that toll road to access downtown, where-as I think most people in the far West-End (near shortpump) actually work out there in Innsbrook, or in one of those huge office buildings off of 288. (Like off the West Creek Parkway, or the capital one building)
The 'South Side' to me is the huge industrial area south of Richmond, and then down to Chester... and just based on reputation, it sounds like there's a LOT of crime down there.

Chesterfield, including Midlothian is often referred to as southside... basically anything south of the James can be called southside. The not so nice part you refer to is closer to the I-95 corridor. People in the West End commute downtown just as much as people in Midlothian/Chesterfield and likewise for working in the west end.
Westend folks get a bad rap for being snoppy, but as someone that grew up south of the river I can truly say that some folks in Midlothian and specifically Salisbury aren't any better. Since some in the area feel they are perceived as inferior, it seems they are always trying to prove themselves

Windsor Farms is very upscale, as is Westmoreland. Salisbury/Midlothian area is ok as is the far West End.
