Go Steelers!

I agree with ArchGuy, look at the near West End. In another few years, your friend's child will be in school, so take that into consideration. Mary Munford is a good elementary school. Another area to look at, if you love the Fan but want more of a neighborhood, is the Bellevue area. You need to be a little more selective here, b/c it varies by street in some places, and would not be too kid-friendly. But I think you'll find neighborhoods you'll all enjoy there, and you're still less than 10 minutes from downtown and nightlife. An easy cab fare. And a really eclectic group of people. Drive around and check it out. I would live there and put my son into Holton. We love that area. Another option might be Westover Hills. Great houses, yards, again, 10 minutes from dowtown. But I don't know much about Westover Hills Elementary.

Bellevue isn't sketchy at all. Lots of kids in the neighborhood too. We love it, and the parents love Holton. Our kids will go there when we have them.

I always laugh when anyone says a place has little or no culture. Everywhere I've been has culture, it just may not be the culture I prefer.

I can second the statement of Bellevue being safe and kid-friendly. Tons of kids everywhere. Lots of parents walk their kids to Holton in the mornings. In terms of safety, it's as safe as any neighborhood can get IMO.

Yeah, Bellevue is not the slightest bit sketchy. Good liquor store too.

True. One place where Virginia has decided to take the worst of the northeast and apply it...

Annoying at the least. Am I supposed to believe that the government as a drug dealer is safer/better?
