Good points^ I sure wish that highway weren't there.
Is that considered the division between Shockoe Slip & the Bottom?

This article is semi-related to the topic:
The pitfalls of "Entertainment*Districts" - Strong Towns Blog - Strong Towns

It encapsulates the idea of organic development of local businesses as opposed to the top-down anchor mentality that developers use.

It acts as one... generally I'd say the Slip ends around 15th and that's where the Bottom begins.

How on earth is it a scam? Many of them have been selling successfully at good prices, and they are giving a new life to downtown. You may dislike the old warehouses, but other people prefer the lofty urban environment over the boring suburbs of henrico and chesterfield. Did I also mention that for new development in the recession, all of these are selling very well, compared with the housing market. Also, if you thinks its a scam, you are wrong by far. Lofts like there have been around since the 1960s, and can be found in most cities with old factories, owned and run by many different people (Its not a big scam done by one person). I sort of know some of the people involved in this, and they look like they have more interest in reviving downtown than money.

Please tell me more about why you think itds sa scam

As if traffic wasn't congested enough down there in shockoe bottom, closing off the most used blocks on the most used road in shockoe bottom is a very stupid idea. (no offense)

I think that the main error in your suggestion is that closing off those streets includes closing off 14th street, which is how people get from downtown to the interstate, and to the manchester district (14th st = mayo bridge)

Went to the macarthur center in Norfolk this past weekend...that city seems so ahead of us and no there wasn't a lot of traffic. Richmond should definitely consider a downtown mall...
