I'm an amateur/hobbyist photographer who lives in Williamsburg. I love street photography, and have fallen in LOVE with Richmond. I get up there as often as I can to take photos, but seeing as how it's 45 minutes to an hour away, I don't get up there as much as I would like.

I'm looking for interesting neighborhoods (or events) that would be good for people/street photos, but that are relatively safe for someone carrying around expensive camera equipment. I usually go to Carytown or Shockoe, but would like to branch out a little.

You could try the fan. Maybe even downtown and shockoe again during lunch, when people are getting off work, or about in that area on friday and saturday evening.

Try Church Hill, the Fan, Bellevue (Northside), Oregon Hill and the Jackson Ward. The following link will provide information about these neighborhoods and others:

I doubt you'd have any trouble in any of these areas during the day, but (as you know) you need to be smart with how you behave with that type of equipment. Good luck!

I'd add Ginter Park, Libbie/Grove, Museum District, Windsor Farms. Bon Air even!

I also love that neighborhood just north of Windsor Farms (Greenway-Roslyn-Oak Lanes) but I forget what it's called just now. And of course Westmoreland Place is stunning but while it (and others here) have beautiful streets they don't really have urban "street life" which is what the OP may mean.

VCU Monroe Park campus area, downtown financial district around lunchtime during the week, Fan District, Museum District, University of Richmond, Libbie and Grove district, the South of the James Farmer's Market at Forest Hill Park, Broad Street between Belvidere and Foushee during First Friday's Artwalk, Broad Street between 6th and 14th Streets, the State Capitol grounds, VCU Medical Center campus, possibly MacArthur Ave around lunch or dinner.

That should get you started.
