I'll be moving to the Tri-Cities area soon and need an apartment. I really like the Courthouse View apartments from what I see on the website (they seem to be a great value) but I've heard bad things about the city, is it safe to live in Old Town Petersburg? Are there crime/safety issues? I'm a single male so schools are not a problem. Thanks.

I am sorry to hear such negative things about Petersburg.

I am a VA transplant here for work. Old Towne Petersburg has really become a wonderful place to live in the last 2 years. A short walk from my apartment at Mayton Transfer Lofts are plenty of diverse restaurants that you can yelp (Saucy's walk up, Demolition Coffee, Wabi Sabi, Brickhouse run, Andrade's), there is a YMCA directly next door to the lofts which has some great Zumba classes. There are plenty of Antique malls and vintage shops in the neighborhood and we also have a Farmer's Market every Wednesday and Saturdays. Mayton Transfer Lofts is directly across the street from a Police Station and I feel comfortable living here. There is a garden, a dog run and a lot of professionals that live here including a lot of military personnel.

If you go a quarter of a mile Colonial Heights is one exit away with all the big store essentials (Target, Walmart, Sam's Club etc). It is a 30 mins drive to Richmond, 30 mins to Emporia and an hour and a half to VA beach. I think so many people knock Petersburg because it is a predominantly black neighborhood, but if you go to Old Towne Petersburg, it is a diversed and safe area to live. People need to stop living in a black and white world we are in 2012 people !!!! Fear causes a lot of ignorance.

Petersburg is no different from any other area. If not Petersburg, there are other areas close by that can be checked out...Hopewell, Prince George & Colonial Heights. One thing about the tri-cities area is you have a fixture of all cultures & races here. New apts. & homes are being built all over this area. Everyone seems to go about there business, doing what needs to be done, but there are also many friendly folks here too.

What can you all tell me about Hopewell and Colonial Heights? Prince George and Dinwiddie seem too rural for me.
