We are looking to move to VA, a state we have always loved, after having lived in the NE and Southern CA. Currently, we are in Brentwood, TN, just south of Nashville. We LOVE it here but have become frustrated by the lack of support for children with autism, especially at the state level. Our school system is very good but we pay out of pocket for ABA therapy, which is covered in 50% of the US, including the state of VA. My husband went to college at ODU and has longed to be back in VA and we feel that the change may be best for our son. He is turning 7 this Fall and has high functioning autism. His needs are largely social but he does benefit greatly from the ABA therapy we currently have him in (2 hours of ABA weekly + 2 hours of social skills weekly). This is in addition to a 7 hour school day with no ABA.

I can see that there are several fantastic elementary schools in Glen Allen. Can you point me towards one that would be best for our situation? Do they have BCBA's in the schools? They do not in TN. We also have a daughter who, based on TN cut-off dates, will start K in Fall 2013. We have family up and down the East Coast and due to VA's excellent reputation for academics, especially at the college level, we feel that this might be the best time for us to uproot and start over. We will miss TN greatly but need to be where our son will benefit most. Thank you in advance.

UPDATE: Upon researching further, I see that ABA is only covered through age 6. To what extent, then, is ABA implemented in schools? Here in TN, it is not. Also, are the children with ASD in a regular classroom with some assistance? This is what we have currently and it has worked very well. Thanks again!

Since you are asking specifically about Glen Allen, I would contact the Henrico County Public Schools directly and ask them about programs in the Glen Allen area. the Autism Society would have some good info for you as well: Autism Society Central Virginia

Search Results: autism

Hope this points you in the right direction!

Thank you both very much for the information. We are still in the process of deciding when and where we will go but we are looking at both the Glen Allen (Shady Brook or Short Pump Elementary) and Chesterfield (Winterpock Elementary) areas. My son had an excellent year in Kindergarten and is progressing rapidly so that we know he is capable of being pushed even further. We are going to watch 1st grade closely as they have made several changes to the special education program at our home school, most of which appear to be quite positive. If we feel that the school is still not progressive enough, then we will start the moving process. Timing may also depend on openings within my husband's company. Thank you once again. We are excited about this possibility! It's been a long time coming.

Under no circumstances should you move to central Virginia if your child has ASD. The school services are poor, the special ed teachers are uninspired, and the headaches are many. If you want a good public school for your ASD child, go north. The Richmond area has a terrible reputation regarding special education. Beware.

My kids go to Rivers Edge Elementary, and they do have programs for autistic kids. One of our neighbors has a 1st grader with Aspergers, and several times a week, he also joins in my daughter's class. I can't say I know much more than that.
