I moved to Richmond exactly 1 week today. I am looking to go shopping but it seems that all of the malls are outside the city. I do not have a car yet. I took the bus the other day from VCU heading to Short Pump Towne Center only to realize there was no bus to come back. I figured I would go this weekend since I do not work and I have more free time than on weekdays, but the bus does not run on the weekend. I am confussed as to where people shop in the city -- are there any retail shops downtown? If so, where and what names should I look for? I also don't know what area is considered exactly downtown (as in what streets).

Those far I only made it to Kroger for food shopping and saw a great concert by Garbage at the National last night. I like the cute little streets in the VCU areas and the fact that it is very walkable around where I live, but I'm confussed when it comes to the actual shopping.

What are some areas that I should explore near VCU? I know of Cary Street but I have to yet take the bus there. Last time I went there was when I came to visit over the summer. I know there are many restaurants there, so I would like to go. Right now though I need to do some shopping -- I need new clothes to go to work etc. Any suggestuons would be of great help.

you will not find your stereotypical mall in the downtown area, though there are many local shops. the busses don't go to the malls on purpose- suburbanites don't want any of the poor city dwellers in their malls. i think there are clothing stores on cary street but i have never shopped there personally.

Shopping for what? Clothes, try Cary street. Random, try willow lawn/broad street, pretty sure bus goes out there. Look at where target/old navy etc. are

A car isn't necessary in Richmond, provided you live in the right place, but it sure is useful - Richmond public transit might as well not exist. It's useless

Depending on the types of clothes, Carytown, Willow Lawn, White Oak Vilage, Regency Square are all accessible by GRTC.

Use the system map and determine which routes to use.

Shopping for mens clothes within the city limits can be challenging. Grace street in downtown has such a great feel to it. I'm hoping that with the new condos/apartments, that some good shopping will return to this area.

I went to the Willow Lane by bus but they don't have much there. I barely could find anything. My husband came in town for a couple of days and we went to the Short Pump Mall. I got what I needed from there.

Yeah, Willow Lawn is pretty weak in my opinion. Did you try Carytown? It's got more for women than men, but it's also kind of expensive because they're mostly boutique shops.
