hi, i remember back in the summer there was something about a farewell to the huguenot bridge. i was under the impression that it was going to be demolished but rebuilt to add a bike lane and pedestrian sidewalk but...

i checked vdots website about it today and it says its going to have a bike lane and sidewalk only. that sounds like no car/truck traffic.. is this true? will we not be able to drive over the huguenot bridge once construction is complete?! omg!

that sounds so ridiculous to me to end traffic lanes but only allow bikes and pedestrians. am i wrong? does anybody know more about this? thanks in advance!!!!

It will have two vehicular lanes like the existing bridge, but with wide emergency lanes that will double as bike lanes. Sidewalks as well.

From the VDOT site -

Quote:
What's Being Done

The bridge reconstruction project involves replacing the existing structure with a new structure in approximately the same location as the current bridge. The new structure will have one 12 foot lane and one 10 foot shoulder in each direction. The 10 foot shoulder will function as both an emergency lane and a lane to allow bicyclists to safely use the bridge. In addition, there will be a five foot wide sidewalk on each side for pedestrians. The approach roadways on each end will only be improved as necessary to accommodate the bridge replacement.
Also from the VDOT site -

Mandy! Haven't seen you posting in a long while, lol.

Man that bridge looks so much better. I HATED driving on that bridge. You better hoped you didn't have anything in your stomach before driving on that thing!

I never liked driving on bridges period. I feel a little better driving on the 5 lane highway on 76 as oppose to Huguenot Bridge. Never felt safe. How many patches can there be on one bridge, you know?

If you thought it was bad to drive over, it was even worse to bike over. Felt incredibly unsafe, and I only did it once. I'm glad they're widening it and including some thoughts re: bicycles

The only thin worse than driving it was getting stuck in traffic on it. Nice view but it gave too much time to look at the disrepair.
