What about Freeman? It has IB, and it is Henrico's leadership academy; correct? I see Godwin and Deep Run mentioned so often over Freeman. Is it because Freeman is more diverse and test scores are not as solid, or what? Do higher-achieving people zoned to Freeman choose to go private, so Freeman suffers? It seems as if it has so much to offer, so I am trying to understand what is going on there and why it doesn't get as much discussion here. Thanks.

Freeman was probably once the crown jewel of Henrico, but as the suburbs pushed into the exurbs, the wealth moved westward. Where there is wealth, test scores will improve. That said, I know a lot of kids from Freeman who have good heads on their shoulders. Also, you don't have to live in the district to get into an IB program (though I thought Henrico's west end IB program was at Tucker).

The wealthiest kids in henrico go to freeman. There are also lower middle class kids. Western henrico has pretty exclusively upper middle class - no wealthy, no poor. Mother wealthy in henrico live next to the city off river road etc.

Freeman is an excellent school

Freeman is located in the more traditional West End, and with the relatively recent development of Short Pump and the far West End, many upper middle class families have relocated into the Godwin and Deep Run districts.

Naturally, Freeman has a lot more lower middle class students along with kids coming from older money. So there's a bit of income diversity within in. This shows in the SAT scores as Freeman scores the same, and in some cases, higher than Deep Run and Godwin, but with a lower participation rate.

It's still a great school, it's just Godwin and especially Deep Run's facilities and development have somewhat taken a portion of the upper middle class Freeman students. On a smaller note, the Leadership Program is usually not as popular as Godwin's Math and Deep Run's Technology Centers.

Freeman is a good solid school with a more diverse student body than Deep Run & Godwin. Freeman is the specialty center for International Studies and Tucker is the IB school in the west end.
