I drew up a plan for a 22-mile transit line for Richmond and I'm wondering what other residents think of it. I imagine it would be light rail, but other options are always fun to discuss.

Some explanation:

Innsbrook has drawn up plans for an internal transportation network, so I included it as a black line. They are available on their Innsbrook Next page.

I can see West Creek companies like Capital One offering shuttle bus service to their employees until the area becomes substantial enough to warrant its own transport network.

Also, I drew two options for the stretch between Willow Lawn and Hungary Spring. Only one would be built in my scenario.

To avoid running along Cary St, the Fan segment would be in the median of the Downtown Expressway. I envision the toll plaza becoming a thing of the past as the world moves to open-road tolling.

Why not Grove Avenue or Broad Street for the Fan?

Toll Plaza is currently transitioning to open road tolling, but there will still be an change/cash component.

This place definitely needs better transit, pretty pathetic what we've got seeing as this is the state capitol. Probably since Richmond doesn't have "real" City traffic issues it's not a big deal but should still be an option for people. Your plan looks awesome.

Thanks for the replies!

I think running a transit line down Grove Ave presents the same problem as Cary St. It just wouldn't fit in with the appeal of the area. However, given that the toll plaza will likely be the same size (I knew about the project but haven't seen the plans), it might make sense to have the line operate eastbound along Cary and westbound along Main. As for Broad, it's just too far away to provide a useful service to Carytown.

Richmond traffic isn't awful like DC, but I think it still gets pretty bad. Also, the traffic arrangement is just stressful to drive in. I generally stick to the west end unless someone else is driving downtown.

Combine the OP's light rail with this fantasy commuter rail and Richmond will be on the map!

I think a rail connecting short pump to the airport via downtown is a great idea actually...

However we natives have been waiting on a plan to connect Richmond to DC and more recently Charlottesville to VA beach via Richmond for many many years

The short answer to why this hasn't happen is simply because travel by car is quick and easy enough already. Richmond will have to undergo more growth before these plans can be taken seriously
