No movie theaters in Richmond?
Why aren't there movie theaters in Richmond proper? One would think the demand would be high, given the VCU population.

It's an odd place, there are no do-it-yourself car washes here either.

Bow Tie Cinemas is planning to open a new theater on the Boulevard near the Diamond in late 2008:
"Movieland at Boulevard Square
Richmond, VA
The first brand new, state of the art multiplex cinema in the City of Richmond, Virginia! Movieland at Boulevard Square is an historic restoration, prominently and centrally located in the City of Richmond, with direct, convenient access to Interstates 95 and 64 as well as all of Richmond’s residential neighborhoods. Movieland will feature 16 screens with stadium seating, all digital projection, custom designed wood and leather seating, and an enhanced offering of food and beverages, including beer and wine. Movieland also features a unique design which highlights and showcases the property’s history as a locomotive assembly facility. Movieland at Boulevard Square is scheduled to open in the fall of 2008."
While you may not have heard of BowTie, they produce a very nice product. They have similar (though not immediate) plans on a block in downtown as well.

The Westhampton Theater (Libbie and Grove) and the Byrd Theater (Carytown) are two that come to mind. The Westhampton is an art house theater and the Byrd shows second run movies.
There is a do-it-yourself car wash at the East Coast gas station at Staples Mill and Broad.

Correct, but the question was in reference to within the Richmond City Limits.

You would think VCU would create a large market but kids today are more likely to rent a DVD or watch movies online. As for the city there is a perception that that problems will arise with any venue that allows late night gatherings of people, especially those under 18/20.

Is that a fact or the general perception? In other words, have city officials stated this as a reason? Personally, I'd like to see an independent theater, which probably wouldn't attract unruly youths. I can do just fine without 'Dan in Real Life' or 'Happy Feet,' thank you. The last time I walked by the Byrd they were playing 'Goonies.' I guess if you're charging only $3 you have a limited budget for royalties.

The Westhampton at Libby and Grove is probably your best best for an independent theater, and it's in Richmond proper.
And as I mentioned earlier, Bow Tie Cinemas will provide a better product than one would find with say Regal.
