Interested in moving down 95 (Richmond: to rent, credit, house)

I have lived and worked in Wahington, DC all my life and am interested in moving to Richmond to be closer to family. I just don't know where to start. Should I look for housing first (Need an affordable rent for a house for myself and kids)? Or should I look for work first? I am an Administrative Assitant with college credits and a vast array of work experience from non profit to hospitality. I make an ok living in dc but it is SO EXPENSIVE!! Plus I want to be near my mom, my daughter in college (VUU) and my siblings. My children and I need a fresh start and I fall in love with the idea everyday. Just don't know where to begin. Any advice on jobs, neighborhoods, schools. I have high school and middle school aged children.

We also moved down here from the DC area several years ago and have never regretted it. Cheaper cost of living, nicer people, slower-paced, etc. Definitely look for a job first before moving, I can't imagine moving somewhere with kids without finding a job first but maybe that's just me. You'll have no problem finding a place to rent, try Craigslist. The best school districts are probably in Midlothian and Henrico's West End. There are several discussions already posted here about good schools. Those areas are also more expensive but worth it in my opinion. Both of those areas are about 20 minutes outside of the city.
