Hello. I currently live in Columbia SC (originally from PA) and am thinking about moving to Richmond VA next year to be closer to family. What are some good suburbia areas around Richmond to look into moving? I'd rent an apartment, house or townhouse when I first move there. Thank you

Mechanicsville (more rural)
Henrico West End (high density suburban)
Midlothian (standard suburban)
In the city - Fan, Museum, Scotts Edition or Carytown districts.

Fellow transplant with a vote for Glen Allen / Short Pump area which are neighborhoods in Western Henrico. I've lived in both (still here) and extremely happy with the area.

Why would try NOVA or DC be appropriate to the question in any way.

Closer to PA. More things to do than in Richmond. You never know.

I am biased toward Mechanicsville because I've lived here for the last 3 years, so I'd say that first. Like some other folks have said, it largely depends what type of suburbia you're looking for. Can you give us some more context? Do you prefer living within a few minutes of shopping? Do you want to live by a mall? Do you want neighbors extremely close? Do you want to be around more families or more younger folks?

It's difficult to give you a recommendation on "suburbia" when almost all of the area is that in some form.

Funny in that I am looking to move from Richmond to Columbia. In large part, real estate is much less expensive in SC. I make a good salary but still find VA an expensive state to live and raise a family in. For example, We need more space being a growing family. We need a house with at least 2100 sq/ft. In the area in which I live there are very few houses and those that are available are at 300k (I do not have time for a fixer up'er). In SC, that same house would be 190k. The school's are a wash but I am not fond of the SOL's and essentially teaching kids on how to take tests. In SC, they begin teaching kinds in kindergarten foreign language. No personal property tax....no pain in the tail annual car inspection....yeah my feet are getting itchy.

Just remember to visit Columbia in July/August. The heat and humidity is brutal. Best of luck.
