You have a very good friend that is coming to town to visit. What two special places (ok we will accept more than two) would you say they HAVE to see? It could be a historical place, a park, restaurant, mall, ...etc.

It really depends on their interests IMO. There are lots of great places in the area, but if I had to pick I would base that on what the person enjoys (e.g., history, art, nature, etc.)

I think walking around Belle Isle, seeing the hollywood rapids, and old quarry is always cool but of course I am an out-doorsy type.

You MUST get a sub at The Black Sheep. Tiny little cafe off Grace St.

Highly recommend the VMFA.

If they have kids, Maymont and CMOR. Well, I take everyone to Maymont if it's nice out.

Maymont and Carytown. One is natural/historic beauty, another is a nice Downtown, boutique shopping district/hangout/walkable fun place with lots of stores, fantastic eateries/cafes and such to hangout and have a nice meal or snack etc. based on the guest's preference (plenty to choose from). Everytime I have guests from out of town I take them two these two places and they all love them!

My first-time guests to Richmond always get taken to Hollywood Cemetary.

No exceptions!
