Prefer City Atmoshpere (Richmond, Cana: apartment, lofts, condos)

I will be moving to Richmond within a month for a new position, and would like some help in determing the areas I would be most interesed in.

I prefer the city atmosphere with restaurants and such located nearby however I dont care for a loud bar scene.

I am white and not gay and not looking for any areas that might promote otherwise. I hope this doesnt offend anyone, but I need to be honest to find exactly what I want.

I've read a considerable amount of concerns about crime and personal safety on other threads, and was wondering if someone can enlighten me on this fact. Especially what neighborhoods are not ones you would even consider. I understand by living in the city that there are some drawbacks, but I have lived in the downtown area of a city for 4 years and have never feared for my safety. I need to know how serious a problem living in downtown Richmond can be.

I do not have kids, so school districts dont mean anything to me. I will be working southeast of the city, so in order to keep the commute to work down I would like to avoid the west or north sides.

On the internet I found the Lofts at Canal Walk, and the building seems to be what I am looking for, but I have no clue about the area. (its located on Main St)

The various apartment buildings, condos and lofts in Church Hill, Shockoe Slip, Shockoe Bottom, and Tobacco Row seem like they might meet your needs. The Fan and Museum District may also be appealing. Personal safety is what it is, and although crime can happen anywhere, most incidents of violent crime occur in localized areas outside of these neighborhoods. They are not crime-free but pretty safe. I have friends that live in all these neighborhoods (I live in Byrd Park) and none of them have had any problems.

Agree with prior post on what you might like ... there are some great high rises on the river coming along downtown with terrific views - if that's your thing. Also good places in Shockoe Bottom and Church Hill. But for walking to restaurants, etc., my best suggestion would be the Fan or Museum District. Not right downtown - but all convneiences - walkability, shops restaurants, etc. Chek it out.
