My 11 year old son and I are to move to Richmond, Va. Here are our preferences (I'm afraid it will be impossible to acheive all of this):

-To live in a culturally diverse area with lots of old buildings and a park within walking distance

-A good public school for my son to go to

-Affordable rent for a single teacher's salary

Would this combination be possible? If so, where?

(We are from Louisiana and want something completely different)

If you want culturally diverse with old buildings and a park within walking distance, you'd probably need to look at places in the city like The Fan, Museum District, Byrd Park area, or perhaps Church Hill or Westover Hills/Forest Hill. Rent would be doable on a teacher's salary, but schools in these areas higher than elementary school could use some improvement. Good is a relative term however.

You can go for suburban and find rents that would work and good schools, but you sacrifice the character of an older area and things become less walkable (like parks).

I also recommend the Fan, Museum District, Byrd Park areas. Great old buildings, lots of character and walking distance to shops and restaurant, plus the best movie theater in town, The Byrd. There's a good elementary school in the neighborhood, but Richmond Public Schools are a purely urban district with all the baggage that brings. Virtually no one recommends them from middle school on up.

Thank you for the suggestions and advice. Looks like i'm not going to be able to live where i would like without sacrificing my son's education. Too bad that i can't afford private school.

I am also a teacher moving to Richmond with some of the same questions. Thanks for asking.

Try the Westover neighborhood.. part of it is in Richmond City the other part is in Henrico County. If you can get in that area of Henrico County you will be in the Tuckahoe school district (one of the best in the county) but still live the urban lifestyle. The best of both worlds! There are some apartments in this area not sure of the rent but I'm sure its pretty high.
