Mixed couple moving from germany to the hanover county
Hello,
my family (I`m german, husband and 2 children are american) lives in Germany right now and we plan to move to the States. We were looking at a clean, small city with good schools, not far from a big city (because of access to hospitals for our sick son). So somehow through the information over the internet we figured out Ashland/Hanover County could be that place. But, of course we don`t really know. Can anybody tell me as much as information possible, that could help us? (Situation as discribed above, one of our children is disabled).
Every help is greatly appreciated! (especially special schooling - insurance -preexisting conditions)
Thanks a lot. flora113

I recommend hanover county!! specifically the west end/tuckahoe district. that is where I attend school and I love it. the area is really nice, pleasant, and clean. ashland is beautiful but it kind of isolated. henrico is closer to a lot of the fun and exciting things that richmond has to offer!

Ashland is a town in Hanover County. Hanover has two divisions to it, so to speak, and the west end part of it that the previous person speaks about, is relatively close to Ashland. That end of Hanover is pretty isolated except for its relative location to Short Pump. I would recommend Mechanicsville in Hanover, and if medical conditions are a concern, there is a hospital there with a medical center. There are quite a few schools in Mechanicsville. You could live in 23111 or 23116 zip codes, or closer to Hanover courthouse if you like rural areas. In Mechanicsville you would also be 7 miles from VCU/MCV Medical Center hospital which is a medical school hospital. There are a lot of hospitals in Richmond, but in Mechanicsville you are relatively close to 2 hospitals. Mechanicsville is a small town and you are 7 miles from downtown Richmond.

Move to Mechanicsville
Mechanicsville is a beautiful neighborhood located in Hanover County (rated top 100 places in the United States to live in 2007) that is convenient to all. I have a home for sale in Oakley Hill it is the perfect location. Close to hospitals, schools, shopping, (shopping center is within walking distance) Downtown Richmond, etc. Perfect location and great family neighborhood. My home is for sale or Lease Purchase. You can view my home on this website View my Tours and then click on 7066 Daffodil Road, Mechanicsville, VA
This a blue ribbon school district. It is an excellent place to raise a family and the taxes are very low.
If you are looking for a quiet beautiful neighborhood that is close the City but yet Country living this is it!
You can e-mail me if you would like more information.
Good Luck!

Coming from NYC I can tell you that while Hanover it georgous it is mostly rural and with you from Germany where neighborhoods exist you may feel very isoloated. I live in the West End of Richmond and my kids go to school there and I love it! Everything is close by and for a city girl it is ideal for me while also feeling quiet like the country. Try searching for the schools in schoolmatters.com and along with the other zip codes consider 23229. I am also from a mixed marriage and we get along fine here. Feel free to contact me it you want help. I am here only a year and know what it feels like to be new....very new lola_life_love@yahoo.com

Ashland is pretty far north in Hanover. You might want to stick with Mechanicsville. There is a hospital there called Regional Memorial Hospital. It's farely new still and very nice. I had to take my son there before and it was a good experience. The neighborhood is clean, safe and considered to be very desirable.

I've lived in Hanover County for a good 30 plus years...most of my life. Mechanicsville is a great place to live no matter where you are from. It's a former agricultural region that is nicely populated with restaurants (some chain and some 'mom and pops'), a large library, several schools, hospital, shopping, home improvement stores...all you could need. Average house price is about $250-$500k with new and mature properties dotting the area. While I attended Lee-Davis HS, I have found that Hanover High School is one of the best high schools in the county. There is a small boom of growth, lots of young families...a small town feel. And it's very historic: Patrick Henry lived not far from Mechanicsville!
Here's a link to the Hanover school systems. It should provide the details you seek for your child's needs: http://hanover.k12.va.us/. Tax information for Virginia counties: http://www.tax.virginia.gov/site.cfm?alias=WhereToFile.
There is also Short Pump (Henrico County) where Deep Run HS resides, which is a great school! It's closer to big malls but more expensive to live in this area: hospitals, dense population, heavy traffic, rapid growth, inspite of that it's lovely. Here's a link to Henrico school systems: http://henrico.k12.va.us/.
Hope this helps. You will love it here!
