Question Richmond to Hampton- Anyone commute?

I am so happy we are moving from Alexandria !! I am from the east end of Richmond and have missed Richmond so much over the years.

But the problem is that my husband's job will be in Hampton (crap!) and not Richmond. I looked and there is no commuting rail line from Richmond to anywhere down there.
Does anyone know if there are carpools, park and rides or anything?
We will live in Williamsburg if the commute is not possible from Richmond.

Thoughts? We are moving early next year (feb)

thanks all !

i commute from bottoms bridge to Newport news daily, and it isn't pleasant.
but can be done i try to work night shift but its not always possible.
I-64 is out dated it needs to be 3 or 4 lanes all the way from Richmond to Hampton.
in the summer with the obx er's and people who cant drive it takes 2 hrs during summer and weekends forget it, i have friends who travel to the outer banks from out of state, and I've told them on Friday stop over here at my house and leave at 11 pm to go to the beach.
if i had it to do over i would look around Williamsburg, west point or lanexia,
i do see vans passing me full of commuters while driving so i guess they have some sort of car pooling . i have ill regular hours so i couldn't use it

Does VDOT have any plans on the table to widen that part of I-64? If so, do you know what the timetable is? Thanks.

no plans ,vdot couldnt even afford to repave I-64 for jamestowns 400 year celabration. 2007
the only answer in va to improve roads is to make it a toll rd.
there was talk about making the tunnel a toll also.

i feel the biggest problem is people heading to the beach leave there home and start drinking (heh we're on vacation attitude) heading for the outer banks and by the time they hit the tidewater they are pretty well in the bag.
people just cant drive as bad as these tourist do,95 to 100 isnt out of the question.
i have learned to just set my cruise on 70 stay in the right lane and watch them sail by.
i leave at least 1/2 hour early account of wrecks, i have also learned every back road from richmond to hampton in case of a wreck

That's really sad. Is it that VA can't afford to do this kind of routine maintainence or are they choosing to spend their federal road dollars elsewhere? Also, why is it that in VA "toll-roads" are always the solution to a budget problem when it comes to road improvements? I don't see other surrounding states doing this.

federal spending has been cut and va tax base is reasonable, both make for more money in our pocket.
so the money isnt there, the road isnt that bad but is due for new pavement but i have seen worse in other states.
the toll roads are where private corp build the roads and charge for the use .
we have a new bridge in richmond and it started out at $1.50 to use, no one used it so they raised the rate twice so its now $2.25 or $2.50. yeAH THAT WILL GET MORE PEOPLE USING IT?
if i cross to go to a certain store it cost me $5.00 plus tax, i can shop the same store on line tax free fand pay shipping for 5 bucks
