No one ever suggests the Northside, but Barton Heights/Brookland Park/Ginter Park (23219) are all close-in neighborhoods, walkable to Downtown and the Fan. More so Barton Heights. The Northside neighborhoods by reputation are "rougher" than what you'll find on the Near West, but the homes are cheaper, and you and your fiancée would have better parking options. And again, you're not that far from the more vibrant neighborhoods or the Raceway and all the events there...

Great neighborhoods, and getting better, but probably not places where those new in town should live until they have a feel for them

Forest hill, Westover hills, and whatever the area along the river around pny Pasture is called all seem to fit. I really like living near Forest hill park with the Farmers market and trails along the river and in the park. Nice neighbors
