Moving to Richmond, VA from Charlotte, NC
We will be moving to the Richmond area from Charlotte, NC. We will be empty nesters for the first time when we move and leave our 2 young adults in Charlotte.
Looking for a mixed us area with lots to do, gym, shopping, movies. We also have a boat and area looking for area close a large lake. We are out on our boat every weekend in summer and fall. Will be making a long weekend in Febuary to check out areas. suggestions!

Some ideas!
Lake anna spottsylvania county, woodhaven lake (in New Kent county), Brandermill (chesterfield county), Woodlake (chesterfield county), Lake chesdin (Dinwiddie County). Reaserch them.. and tell me what you think!! All the lakes listed above have neighborhoods in or around them. Brandermill and Woodlake are both in a very populated area where gym, shopping, movies ect. are really close. They are more expensive. Probably the least expensive will be woohaven.. I remember going there as kid with my grandmah all the time.. a real cool place. Also have you thought about living on the James River? Just some ideas.. from what I remember growing up in Richmond!!! Good luck!

Hanover or Caroline counties
I moved here from Charlotte 13 years ago. The western part of Hanover county is only 20 minutes from Lake Anna. About 30 minutes or so from the booming Short Pump area just to the west of Richmond.
Caroline county is a bit more affordable, but also more remote. Closer to the lake, furthur from Richmond. Stafford County is north of us.. fastest growing area of Virginia. You would still be close to Lake Anna, but up near Fredericksburg and only 45 minutes or so from DC. All depends on what you want.

Thanks for all the great info. We are moving because of my husbands job. We love Charlotte and would not move if we had other choices.

A lot is going to depend on the price range you are looking for. And in what part of Richmond will your husband be working? Some of the roads here are toll roads, so if you can, it is always best to avoid them.
If your husband will be downtown or on the southside, I would suggest looking in the eastern end of Chesterfield. There is a public boat landing at Henricus that you could use to access the James. There is also Chesdin nearby.
But if your husband will be in the West End, it would probably be best to stay on that end of town. Like some of the previous posters mentioned, there is Lake Anna, which buts up to Spotsylvania and Louisa counties.
Give us an idea on some more specifics and perhaps this forum can give you a bit more information.
Hope your February trip goes well!
