Hello.

My wife and I are looking to purchase a home (upper limit of about $650k) within reasonable commute (20 minutes or less?) downtown, and with good public schools for our small kids. We are relatively new to the area and are renting in the fan now.

We have been thinking about Henrico, particularly in the area around U of R. However, some people we know who live in that area raised some concerns about the public schools, and said that many people who live in that area send their children to private school for middle and high school?

What do people think about Tuckahoe Middle School and Freeman High? They seem to get good reviews online?

Are there other areas that you think would be worth looking at?

Thank you!

Do they live within the Richmond city limits, or in Henrico County? U of R is right at the edge of the city, so the surrounding area includes parts of both Richmond and Henrico, which are completely separate administrative divisions with separate schools systems, police, courts, etc. That concern about the schools is usually expressed with regard to the City's school system.

I will defer to other posters with regards to Tuckahoe/Freeman in particular, but generally, western Henrico public schools are well-regarded.

Tuckahoe and Freeman are by all accounts very good schools. But a lot of parents in the area will send their kids to private schools for other reasons

For more house for the budget there is always Chesterfield. Many subdivisions around the area of Chesterfield Towne Center (Robious/charter colony etc) and subdivisions as you go down the Rt. 360 corridor all have good schools

Each are in the 20-30 minutes to downtown range (with some tolls)
