Hello there--
I am considering a move to RIC again. I had opportunity to visit there for about a week staying at friends house in Church Hill area back in 2004. Richmond reminded me alot of where I currently live in upstate NY-- though RIC is larger and seems to have more things to do especially when it comes to the arts.

My question which are good neighborhoods for a single, Black female in her 30s (with 2 dogs)? How is parking in the neighborhoods as I would be looking for apartment first. One of my dogs happens to be a lovable pit bull I've had for 8 years; a "barrier" to finding apartment as most of the rental companies I've seen have breed restrictions--.

Also, what are some of the "up and coming neighborhoods"? I may be interested in living around there too, as long as it doesn't seem too isolated.

Thanks

I currently live in Byrd Park, a large city park between the Fan District and the James River. It would be an excellent choice for you and the dogs. There is a dog park, too, if your dogs are social. The one problem - rentals are somewhat scarce. The neighborhood is made up of mostly single-family homes and some condos. It is definitely a transitional neighborhood and that's what makes it a great place to live - all age ranges, races, incomes, etc. It's a pretty safe neighborhood - I've been living there almost five years and have never had a problem or felt unsafe. Look on any city map and you will find it.

Other neighborhood of possible interest to you would be the Fan District, Museum District, Jackson Ward, Carver, Ginter Park, Church Hill. They are all in relatively close proximity to each other and each offers it's own unique vibe. Good luck and welcome to Richmond.

Default thanks

Thanks for the tips. My dogs are social butterflies so I'm sure they'd love it.

Is Byrd park near MCV Hospital (or is it VCU hospital)?

Another good area is along monument avenue. there are wide grass medians with shade separating the flow of traffic. I always see people out with their dogs. There are very nice places around there as well.

Rockwood Park in Chesterfield has a great dog park. On a warm sunny day it is not uncommon to find plenty of dogs and people to socialize with. I have a Black Lab and she loves going to the park. Also, Byrd Park has nice dog park as well. This park is closer to downtown so it is nice if that is the area you end up in.

Bandy Park on Three Chopt near Patterson always seems busy with dogs with their owners and actual dog training classes.

Byrd Park and Monument Ave are both very dog-friendly areas. Although you are not likely to find a decent backyard, you will definitely find plenty of areas to walk them and meet plenty of dog enthusiasts as well. Neither of the areas are "up and coming" but they are charming and convenient.
