Hi RVA people. I'm hoping to get some advice on where to relocate in Richmond. My husband works for CSX and is considering relocating to Richmond. Here is what we are looking for:
- The yard is located in near Bryon Park and commute 20-30 minutes away would be fine.
- We are young 50s empty nesters so school is not a consideration.
- I work from home so high speed internet is necessary.
- We are foodies and bicycling enthusiasts. Love Wegmans!
- Hoping to get something like a condo or townhouse so we can lock and leave.
- We are small city people who love nature.

Looking forward to visiting your city next month. Thank you for any helpful advice!

Welcome, the Acca Rail yard where your husband will be working is well known and quite central to the region. Do you have a price range that you would like to stay in? The nearest Wegmans from his employment is about 15 minutes west which is quite doable. For internet Comcast is pretty much everywhere in Henrico County with Verizon FIOS available in many areas. My first though is the Lakeside area of Henrico County but there are many areas that could meet your wants list.

If your not concerned about schools areas of Richmond around stony point are really nice. Central and easy to get around the area.

Stony Point does have some nice areas and a lot to offer, but it's dicey IMO for "small city people"...seems to me a lot of the lesser elements from downtown-ish are starting to creep in.

I suggest checking West End/Short Pump too. A bit farther out from downtown so if that's a thing FYI, but otherwise incredibly convenient as there's tons of shopping, restaurants etc there, mix of newer and older neighborhoods. Not sure about condos/townhouses though.

We are in the Short Pump area, and there are many new townhouses and condos being built. There's a Wegman's just past Short Pump mall going towards Goochland. West Broad Village may be an option as well, since there are many restaurants within walking distance.

^^I second this. I recently moved away from this area. But, West Broad Village is indeed a great community. The townhomes are gorgeous and range from $350-425K. Here's one to give you an idea:

It would be nice if the OP gave some idea of what price range they would like to buy at, $350K and up may be more than they want to commit to.

Thanks for the insight. We would be renting at first and possibly buying in a year or so. 350k is higher than we would want to go. I'm thinking 250-300k would be more in our range. We don't mind being a bit further out. We are about 15 miles from our Wegmans here in Lockport NY and that works for us. We also prefer more Mom & Pop places not chain restaurants. Any opinions about Mechanicsville or Ashland?
Thanks All!

Default Any new insight from the 2018 post re neighborhoods for empty nesters?

The empty-nester OP's post is similar to my own more recent situation. I will be moving to RVA in the new year. Any new info on potential neighborhoods to scout for renting (newer/updated apt/rent up to $1800mo 2 bd, quiet/suburban feel but close to shopping/bike trails)... My commute would be to downtown. Thank you

It will be hard to find a good apartment in a safe area for $1,800, unfortunately.
