Hi, I’m looking for a little advice on moving to the Richmond area. My husband and I are both from the Northeast originally, but we’ve been living outside Charlotte for about 10 years. We’ve never been to the Richmond area, but he’s being considered for an engineering job there. We want to hopefully find our home to retire in there. We really want a more rural, small town, safe area that’s not over an hour commute to his job in Richmond. We have no young children, so schools aren’t an issue. We hope to find a property with 10 wooded acres or more. I see that a lot of property there is farmland, which we don’t want. Anyway, would love to hear any advice at all about best towns, or even counties with good taxes and that sort of thing. We really value our privacy first and foremost, so don’t want a highly populated area ideally. Thank’s for taking the time
Elizabeth

First thing that comes to mind is Goochland -- not too far from Richmond, but far enough away for peace and quiet. Right on the James River as well.

If you’re really looking for something an hour out, you’ve go a lot of options. An hour west will put you in the foothills. An hour east you can be on a tidal river. An hour north puts you in the DC suburbs. An hour south you’ll be back in NC (well, almost). Central Virginia is very rural outside of the Richmond “beltway” (295 and 288). Lots of beautiful wooded land in all directions, not many people at all.

Thank you! Now that I look at Goochland area on the real estate sites, the properties look like what we’re looking for.

You might want to consider Ashland in Hanover County or the county itself and you would be <30 mins from Richmond.
