I just feel like I am out of the loop. People that love it here must know something that I don't. I would love to know what it is. I don't have a pet to walk, I don't hang out in clubs, I don't smoke so I guess that is the problem. Someone please tell me what I am doing wrong here because I do not enjoy feeling like this..

Have you tried learning about the history of Richmond? Richmond's roots run very deep and are fun to explore, and that way you might be able to find something to relate to with the city or something you like about it which will, in turn, lead to more things you like about the city. I don't know if you're originially from the South, but try to embrace its Southern culture. It's okay to be laid back, hang out, move at a slower pace, and relax in Richmond. The cyclist community is HUGE in Richmond, so if you have a bike get out and ride! It's a great way to meet people and find out new activities to get involved with (bike races around the city go on all the time, for example). Richmond has a lot of problems, yes. But the city DOES have a lot of charm if you can find it. I think most old cities are that way. There's plenty of things to like about Richmond, even though they may be harder to find (it took me 6 years to enjoy the city!).
I don't know if the people know something you don't, but they're probably just a different type of people than you are. From my experience with the city, most people are laid back and easy going. Almost care-free. Especially in neighborhoods like The Fan. I've found many people are very personable. They acknowledge each other and nod or say "hi" when they see each other on the street. I think most of that has to do with being Southern.
And if the news bothers you, why not shut it off? I get bummed out by news too. Sometimes it's best to avoid it.
