Default Richmond Elementary Schools

Is anyone familiar with the reputation of Springfield Park Elementary, in Glen Allen? I have 2 small children; one soon to start kindergarten next year and am trying to decide between 2 houses. One is in Mary Munford district, but is an older home, of course. The other is in Henrico County and is more traditional, suburban home, near this Springfield Park Elementary. I work in the Fan. I have lived in both areas, but having a hard time deciding what's the best atmosphere for the kids and, of course, the best public school for them. I know Mary Munford has a great reputation, but not sure about the other. Thanks!

I don't have any specific knowledge of either, but in case you don't get any feedback from anyone who does, check out greatschools.net.

Jule....I sent you a PM also. I've been very unhappy with SPES, my son has been there two years. I know other parents who have been unhappy as well. My complaints about the school are varied but I'll list a few.
Insane amounts of homework, way over the top for grade school kids...myself and others have complained to the school about this. I'm not opposed to homework, but 2-3hours a night for 3rd graders is a bit much.
Parents not allowed in the building during school hours...this is a big one for me. The school we moved here from encouraged parents to come spend time in their child's classroom....no appt necessary. I've been turned away more than once when I've stopped in to visit my son's classroom. Not allowed to go any further than the front office, even in the morning to drop your child off. The principal stands guard at the front entrance to prevent parents from coming inside.
No holiday parties allowed, or birthday parties. Too many obese kids they say. However parents are asked to send in all sorts of goodies for teachers' parties.

Take note though...the principal, asst principal and head secretary are all leaving this year. Hopefully things will improve.
I'd love to hear opinions from others SPES parents.....maybe it's just me. We moved here from a wonderful school district in another state and I've been extremely disappointed with this school.
